  • Voter Registration

    odellstudios:

    Yeah, voting is important. How important is entirely up to you. However;

    Racial Justice … are we talking about treating people differently because of the color of their skin? LGBTQ rights? Trans rights? Are their rights somehow different from every other American’s? They shouldn’t be. Living wage? Who exactly do you think pays those wages? You do understand how inflation works? Gender gap? Doesn’t exist. Climate change? Yeah, all the scientists agree, all of them, every single one. Legal weed? Maybe if you spent less time worrying about getting stoned, you wouldn’t be so easily suckered into shit like the wage gap or climate change. Refugee asylum? How’s that working out for the rest of the world?

    Let me be clear when I say that perhaps voting is as important as some would like you to believe, perhaps it isn’t, but casting an informed vote is far and away more important. Regardless of whether or not you agree or disagree with my snarky opinion on these matters, get informed, and by doing your own research, not by consuming propaganda that challenges none of your notions. Someone is relying heavily on the continued ignorance of low information voters.

  • Marriage, Civil or Religious

    odellstudios:

    The problem with this argument is, both sides are wrong. Marriage is little more than a financial contract in America today. That doesn’t change the fact that marriage is a religious institution. People married one another at the very founding of this country and long before it, based on the beliefs of their religion, but the government still has the obligation to protect both party’s individual rights. It would be no different if under his religious beliefs a man was granted the right to murder his wife for adultery. They entered into a religious union, however under our laws the man has no right to murder his wife for getting freaky with the mail man. I think this means we have reached a cross roads of sorts. It’s time for our government to no longer recognize marriage at all. A contract would be written and agreed to by both parties and that’s it. The contract is the legal part of the deal, the rest has nothing to do with anything. You are free to go do whatever ceremony or ritual makes you feel good. There is no “separate but equal”, there is simply no legal recognition of the word marriage. If it were up to me I’d eliminate a lot of “perks” (read; tax breaks) that go along with marriage as well. Protection of rights is where the government’s involvement in a union ends (and where it should end in all facets of our lives). The church has no obligation to perform your ceremony, businesses have no obligation to cater it, you have no special rights, you are not a protected “class”. You are an American with the same rights as everyone else, rights which should be protected when you enter into a legal union with another person.

    You have to ignore a LOT of history to claim that marriage is not a religious institution. The only reason marriage exists is because of religion. Or in other words, it’s just something people do (have always done), and because it frequently ends poorly, the government must fulfill its role in protecting each individual’s rights. In fact, it really stems from the notion that humans are apparently monogamous in nature - or so I hear. I’m not entirely convinced, but that’s beside the point. Nothing makes it special to the individuals involved other than the ceremony. You know, the religious part. If you are an atheist then uh, just throw a party? I have no idea what you do if you are both Christian and queer. But whatever the case, it’s your problem. Neither I nor the government are obligated to care.

    Well, you might be saying, there are many forms marriage takes throughout history and in the world today. Why do I care? We’re talking about America. The way I see it, you can “marry” someone however the hell you want to. If you want to sacrifice a couple goats, bathe in their blood and call it marriage, shiny. It doesn’t change the legal contract that you enter in order for the law to work and that contract must be uniform across the board. Bottom line, the government’s role is to protect actual rights and I quote, “make no law respecting an establishment of religion”.

    The red flag for me is the very notion that certain people want to do this in the first place. I want, I want, I want. I reject your notion of marriage, but I want marriage. OK. You want to take part in culture, while at the same time tear it down. You want to take part in tradition, while at the same time destroy it. The motives are pretty clear where malcontents are concerned and it’s got nothing to do with equality. But, as far as I can tell, to strike the word marriage from governmental vocabulary is another positive step toward withdrawing their sticky fingers from our lives.
